Project C.A.R.L
Project C.A.R.L looks like a gore toy but plays like a physics lab, and the lab side is where it earns its attention. Carl is a ragdoll with a full skeletal system plus an organ and vascular system, so impacts do not trigger canned animations. The body answers with spray, splatter, and pooling blood that varies from hit to hit. It is a violent, bloody sandbox made for adult players.
What the Clinical Assistant for Research and Learning Is For
The acronym is spelled out in the demo: Clinical Assistant for Research and Learning. Carl was put in this world to help researchers learn what happens when he is shot in the head or thrown from a height, and the whole setup plays that premise with a straight face.
Underneath the blood is the real work. Carl’s bones, organs, and vessels each take part in the reaction, which is why the injury and blood simulation is described as one of the most in-depth around. Because everything is built from those internal parts, the results feel dynamic rather than scripted.
The long-term plan is to build a real game on top of this system. For now it is a sandbox, and the sandbox is staying. Everything in the demo is a work in progress and subject to change, but the demo itself ships feature complete.
Running a Proper Test in Project C.A.R.L
The demo rewards a method, and a rough routine looks like this:
- Choose a map, starting with The Lab for a clean room.
- Pick one weapon and fix your distance.
- Fire at the same spot and note the blood pattern.
- Swap weapons and repeat.
- Use the physics gun to reposition Carl and test a different angle.
Most people skip the method and empty every weapon at once, which blurs the results into a mess. A slow test shows how the 308, the AK, and the pistol each interact with Carl differently, and that difference is the real lesson of the sandbox. Tinkerers who enjoy cause-and-effect puzzles will find the comparison more satisfying than any single big shot.
The physics gun gives you control beyond firepower. You can lift, pose, and drop Carl, building impacts that no weapon could create alone. Paired with a ledge, it answers the original lab question about falls directly.
The Lab, Vertical Impact Test Site, and Zombie Waves
Two maps ship with the demo. The Lab is a small, single-level testing area, ideal for learning how each of the 6 weapons behaves without distractions. Vertical Impact Test Site raises the stakes with a drop of up to 16 m, a ramp, and a pile of objects to experiment with.
Once you reach Vertical Impact Test Site, height becomes the main variable. A 16 m fall tests Carl’s skeletal system in a way no pistol shot can, and the ramp turns a plain drop into a small stunt course.
The one extra mode is a zombie wave survival shooter, and it is very simplistic right now. It is there to show the project will not remain strictly a sandbox, so expect a basic shooter rather than a second full game. Later releases promise more maps, more toys, and proper gameplay loops such as CQB and Carl Fights.
What Players Are Asking For
The comment section already reads like a wish list. Players want sharper weapons such as knives and swords, armor ranging from medieval suits to kevlar vests, and sound cues like wheezing or yelps so Carl reacts audibly as well as physically. Others ask for a graphics configuration menu, since the demo currently has none.
Availability is the other big request. The demo is Windows-only, and some players ask for mobile or VR support, though nothing like that has been announced. Fans are also waiting for the weapons overhaul that is coming in later updates.
Modding is planned to be fully supported when the game reaches Steam, so tinkerers who like building their own props and weapons have something to look forward to. For now it is restricted in the demo.
Project C.A.R.L Questions Answered
What does the demo include?
You get 6 weapons and a physics gun, two maps called The Lab and Vertical Impact Test Site, and a sandbox plus a zombie wave survival mode. Each weapon has its own interaction with Carl, so the 308, AK, and pistol all produce different reactions.
Can you play on mobile or in VR?
Not at the moment. The demo is available for Windows, and mobile and VR are only community requests so far. If you want to follow any changes, the project’s Discord is where new updates and previews are posted.
Will modding be supported?
Yes, modding is planned for the full release on Steam. In the demo it is restricted, so props, weapons, and maps beyond The Lab and Vertical Impact Test Site will have to wait.
Run the test, read the blood, then run it again with a different weapon: that is what Project C.A.R.L asks of you, with Carl, a physics gun, and a 16 m drop at Vertical Impact Test Site as your only lab equipment.
