In Gmod you start on gm_construct or gm_flatgrass with a Physics Gun, a Tool Gun and a spawn menu full of props, which matters because there is no goal except the one you decide to build. The sandbox lets you weld, rope, thrust and pose objects into anything from a simple car to an elaborate machinima scene.

The Physics Gun and Tool Gun in Gmod

The Physics Gun lets you grab almost any object, move it, rotate it and lock it in place with a click. It is the most important tool in the sandbox, and learning to rotate props with the use key while holding them is the first real skill new players pick up. Locking an object holds it in the air, which is how most builds start.

The Tool Gun turns props into machines. Weld fuses objects, Rope connects them, Thruster adds propulsion, Wheel creates working wheels, and Balloon lifts objects into the sky. Combining these tools is how players build cars, planes and contraptions.

Builders who enjoy engineering will spend hours here, testing weight, balance and power. A single car can take many attempts, because uneven welds or misaligned wheels make it flip or spin in circles.

Building Your First Contraption

Most players start with a simple car. Spawn a flat plate from the spawn menu, attach four wheels with the Wheel tool, weld a seat and add numpad controls for forward and reverse. The first drive is almost always chaotic, with wheels pulling in different directions until you fix their alignment.

Beginners often forget that weight matters. Heavy props on top of a light frame make vehicles tip, while too many thrusters can launch a car into the sky.

By the time players build their first flying contraption, they understand balance, center of mass and how Source physics reacts to collisions. Those lessons carry into every later project.

Community Modes Beyond Gmod Sandbox

Sandbox is only one side of Gmod. Community game modes turn the sandbox into structured experiences: Prop Hunt has one team hiding as props while the other searches, Trouble in Terrorist Town mixes traitors and detectives, and DarkRP turns servers into role-play cities with jobs and money.

Each mode has its own vocabulary. In TTT players talk about traitor buttons, karma and RDM, short for random deathmatch. In Prop Hunt, a perfect hiding spot is often a small prop in a corner where nobody expects it.

Social players gravitate toward these modes, because the fun comes from people as much as physics.

Addons, Ragdolls and Machinima

Addons expand the sandbox with new props, weapons, maps and NPCs. The community has built a huge library over the years, and many players have a favorite set they load in every session. Ragdolls are another staple: posing characters with the Physics Gun and Face Poser tool is how many comics and machinima videos are made.

A moment players recognize instantly is a carefully posed ragdoll collapsing because someone forgot to lock one limb. That floppy collapse is a rite of passage.

Storytellers use the camera tools and posing system to set up scenes, and the results range from serious short films to absurd comedy.

Errors, Missing Textures and Common Complaints

The most famous issue is the purple and black checkerboard texture or a red ERROR sign. Those appear when content from other Source titles is missing, and they are the most searched problem among new players. Mounting the right content fixes most of them.

Performance is another topic. Large builds with many props and welds can slow physics dramatically, and crowded servers can lag when players spawn too much at once.

Some players also note that the sandbox can feel empty without a goal, which is why many quickly move to community modes. Others love that the lack of goals is exactly what makes it creative.

Two other questions come up again and again. Players ask how to save builds, and the answer is the Duplicator tool, which copies an entire contraption and lets you paste it later or save it for another session. They also ask how to make NPCs fight, which simply requires spawning NPCs from different factions near each other from the NPC tab.

Gmod gives you the Physics Gun, the Tool Gun and endless props on gm_flatgrass, and then steps aside. Weld your first wobbly car, try Prop Hunt with friends, pose a ragdoll scene, and you will see why players keep returning to the sandbox years after their first build.
