GTA 3
Claude, the protagonist of GTA 3, never speaks a single line of dialogue across the whole story, yet he becomes the center of a Liberty City war between the Mafia, the Yakuza, the Colombian Cartel and his former partner Catalina. The game introduced the fully 3D open-world crime formula, spreading the story across three islands: Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale.

Portland and the Early Story in GTA 3
The story begins with Claude betrayed by Catalina during a bank robbery and then escaping with 8-Ball after a prisoner transfer goes wrong. In Portland you work for Luigi Goterelli, Joey Leone, Toni Cipriani and eventually Salvatore Leone, completing jobs that range from driving to violent hits. Each mission introduces new mechanics and characters.
Beginners often underestimate how dangerous the police and gangs are. Wanted stars rise quickly, and the early pistol is weak against groups.
Story fans enjoy how the Leone family missions build tension, especially when Salvatore’s trust leads to a dramatic turn that pushes Claude toward new allies. That shift sets up the move to a new island.
Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale
Once the bridge opens, Staunton Island brings new employers like Asuka Kasen and Donald Love, plus new gangs. Shoreside Vale opens later, introducing the final stretch of the story and the confrontation with Catalina. Each island has its own atmosphere, from industrial Portland to the business district of Staunton.
By the time you reach Shoreside Vale, enemies are tougher and missions more complex, so having armor and better weapons is essential. The M16 and sniper rifle become far more useful at this stage.
Explorers like hunting for secret areas and stunt jumps across the three islands, discovering hidden weapons and shortcuts along the way. Unique stunt jumps reward bold drivers with cash bonuses.
Side Activities and Collectibles
Outside the story, GTA 3 offers vigilante missions in police cars, paramedic missions in ambulances and firefighter missions. Completing these side jobs unlocks useful rewards like health boosts and fireproof status for certain challenges.
The 100 hidden packages are a classic collectible. Every 10 packages unlock a new weapon at your safehouses, making exploration valuable.
Rampages challenge you to destroy a number of gang members or vehicles within a time limit, and completionists hunt down all 20 for full completion. Each one is marked by a skull icon somewhere in the city.
GTA 3 Classic Frustrations
The game is iconic but also dated in places. Some missions are notoriously difficult, especially those requiring precise driving or timed objectives. The lack of mid-mission checkpoints can make failures painful.
Controls and aiming can feel rough compared to later series entries, and the silent protagonist divides fans who prefer more personality.
Still, many players consider the atmosphere of Liberty City unmatched, from the rain-soaked streets to the radio stations playing in stolen cars.
Common Liberty City Questions
- How do you unlock Staunton Island? Progress through the main story in Portland until the Callahan Bridge opens. The bridge becomes available after a key story mission, letting you cross into Staunton Island and meet new employers.
- What do hidden packages unlock? Every 10 packages add a new weapon at your safehouses. Collecting all 100 gives substantial rewards and helps with tougher missions in Shoreside Vale.
- How do you beat difficult driving missions? Pick a fast, stable car before starting, learn the route in advance and avoid unnecessary police attention. Practice the route without the timer if a mission keeps failing.
GTA 3 still captures the feeling of a dark, rainy Liberty City where Claude rises from betrayal to revenge. Work through Portland’s Leone family jobs, cross the Callahan Bridge into Staunton Island and track down Catalina in Shoreside Vale for one of the most memorable finales of the classic era.
